It has been said of Noah that "he threw the dark scepticism of the world into relief against his own shining faith in God." Heaven is a great reward, surpassing not only all our deservings, but all our conceptions. When Bunyan was due for trial he said: "With God's comfort in my poor soul, before I went down to the justices I begged of God that if I might do more good by being at liberty than in prison, then I might be set at liberty. The whole list is of men who faced incredible odds for God. And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children." Those who forsook Egypt must expect the wrath of men; but they need not fear it, for they are under the conduct of that God who is able to make the wrath of man to praise him, and restrain the remainder of it. Our hopes may never be realized but we must live in such a way that we shall hasten their coming. (3.) But where in the scripture, the Old Testament, does it speak of the resurrection after three days? Perhaps more likely in the time in which the writer to the Hebrews wrote, it would remind his hearers of that epic but bloodthirsty incident told in the Book o Judith, one of the apocryphal books. The actings of his faith: He blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come. It is extraordinary how Rahab became imprinted on the memory of Israel. [5.] He subscribed to God's wisdom, as fittest to direct; and submitted to his will, as fittest to determine every thing that concerned him. The Lord forbid that anything should enfeeble our sense of the value and necessity of such daily grace, There may be that which calls for confusion of face in us, but there is unceasing ground also for thanksgiving and praise, however much we have to humble ourselves in the sight of God. He even commanded them to take his bones with them when they left. He owed his life to this princess; and to refuse such kindness from her would look not only like ingratitude to her, but a neglect of Providence, that seemed to intend his advancement and his brethren's advantage. But this trial was greater than all; he was commanded to offer up his son Isaac. , By faith Joseph, when dying, made mention of the departing. He could not have exacted this oaths, nor could they have taken it, unless both he and they had a sure confidence that what God had spoken would be performed. There are those who seek to be righteous by their faith in the Lord and those who seek to be righteous by their works. He draws attention to the well-known rites of the atonement day; at any rate, if not of that day exclusively, wherever there was a beast the body of which was burnt without the camp, and the blood carried within the veil. Adam then gave the girl to Abel and Cain was sorely vexed. He was a miracle child. There we find these two facts. The supports of his faith. We often say, "It is good to be akin to an estate;" but surely it is good to be akin to the covenant. To put it simply--the secret of his faith was that Moses knew God personally. They talked; they both knew Rome and they had been friendly. God said, "Let the waters above the firmament be divided from the waters beneath the firmament." Wherever this blood is applied, the soul receives a whole Christ by faith, and lives upon him. To some, it has always been the terrifying unknown giving rise to what Hamlet called "that dread of something after death.". A strange mystery is the simple act of faith. He was changed by repentance from the life that is apart from God to the life that walks with God. When we listen to men planning and arguing and thinking aloud, we get the impression of a vast number of things in this world which are known to be desirable but dismissed as impossible. This passage (Hebrews 9:11-22) also sheds light on the question of why Christ had to die. It is also founded on one of their own prophets. (2.) What is here said of his faith, Hebrews 11:6. They had known God in His providence and dealings on the earth, though looking for a Messiah and His day. This, however, does not mean the church, but rather the future seat of general heavenly bliss for the glorified saints. The belief of this will carry us through the greatest difficulties and trials that we can meet with. (2.) The reference is therefore plain and sure. But the higher the privilege, the greater the danger of either despising or perverting it. 3. You remember, though, that Sarah's faith wasn't always so perfect. Nor is it pleasant to nature. Jacob gave blessings and Joseph gave instructions in the light of the nearness of death. We may be fully assured of his existence, of his providence, and of his gracious and powerful presence with us. Yet who beforehand would have anticipated either? If any of the families of Israel had neglected the sprinkling of this blood upon their doors, though they should have spent all the night in prayer, the destroying angel would have broken in upon them, and slain their first-born. They all died in faith, believing the promise that God would, indeed, send His salvation through His Son. Had the energetic activity of faith been first noticed, it would have made more of man; but when the heart had been disciplined in quiet endurance, and lowly expectancy from God, then he could be clothed with the energy of the Spirit. At the moment when she was speaking, there seemed not one chance in a million that the children of Israel could capture Jericho. The traitors within the camp were silenced and looming defeat was turned into tumultuous victory. Behold, there is a ram caught by its horns in the thicket. He lived there in an ambulatory moving condition, living in a daily readiness for his removal: and thus should we all live in this world. He, of course, was referring to the Old Testament scriptures. So here he tells them to "follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: looking diligently lest any man lack the grace of God." See Matthew 2:19; Matthew 9:18; Luke 7:2, etc. (2.) "Let us go forth therefore unto him without the. And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age. And they believed the promise of God that He would provide salvation, and they died believing that promise of God. (b) In Hebrews 11:9 he uses the word paroikein ( G3939) , to sojourn, of Abraham. God had before this tempted or tried the faith of Abraham, when he called him away from his country and father's house, when by a famine he was forced out of Canaan into Egypt, when he was obliged to fight with five kings to rescue Lot,when Sarah was taken from him by Abimelech, and in many other instances. of Samuel and of the prophets, men who, through faith, mastered kingdoms, did righteousness, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword. But when Cain saw that his offering was rejected and Abel's was accepted, he was angry with the Lord for rejecting his offering. And it came to pass that the poor man died and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom; moreover also the rich man died. Cavour said that the first essential of a statesman is "the sense of the possible." We are still walking here below; we are in the place therefore where infirmity is felt, where Satan tempts, where we may fail through unwatchfulness. But this shows the main object of the Spirit of God in directing us for the type that applies to the believer now to an unsettled pilgrim-condition, not to Israel established in the land of promise. Indeed, at no time will its order be more apparent than at present; for I think there can be little doubt to any unbiassed Christian who enters with intelligence into the Old Testament prophecies, that there is yet to be an earthly sanctuary, and, consequently, earthly priests and sacrifices for Israel in their own land; that the sons of Zadok, as Ezekiel lets us know, will perpetuate the line at the time when the Lord shall be owned to be there, in the person of the true David their King, blessing His people long distressed but now joyful on earth. The Christian answer is that the future is not uncertain because it belongs to God; and it is enough that God has commanded and that God has promised. The atonement was at least as real as our sin; and God Himself dealt with Christ as laying sin upon Him, and treating Him, the Great Substitute, as sin before Himself, that at one blow it might be all put away from before His face. She not only bade them welcome, but she concealed them from their enemies who sought to cut them off, and she made a noble confession of her faith, Joshua 2:9-11. It became us to have a Priest, "holy, harmless, undefiled, made higher than the heavens.". ( 1 Corinthians 15:55 ) Jesus has removed the sting of death by taking away our sin. His wish was fulfilled (Joshua 24:32; Acts 4:16). Here observe, 1. Take each of you offerings in your hand and go, sacrifice to the Lord and he will decide." The readers too were to maintain their worship right to the end of life, persevering in faith in the future that God had foretold. Thus distinctly have we set before us the general doctrine of the chapter, that Christ has suffered but once, and has been offered but once; that the offering cannot be severed from the suffering. By the eleventh chapter of Hebrews, the author is rounding third base in his sermon. (2.) Let blinded Jews turn their sightless eyeballs to the mountain of Sinai. The point there is personal glory. Nimrod sought to murder the infant but Abraham was concealed in a cave and his life saved. Observe. For now God came out, so to speak, in His own power and grace, and, in the person of Christ on the cross, put away sin abolished it from before His face, and set the believer absolutely free from it as regards judgment. Such was the Priest of whom God spoke. Oh, you'll be changed, yes, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye. If we examine the historical facts as found in the Old Testament story, what is it rises up before all eyes as to Zion? Christ accounts himself reproached in their reproaches; and, while he thus interests himself in their reproaches, they become riches, and greater riches than the treasures of the richest empire in the world; for Christ will reward them with a crown of glory that fades not away. 11:22 By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones. These are the things of which the writer to the Hebrews is thinking; and these are things which we do well to remember. Then we have the other patriarchs introduced, yet chiefly as regards earthly hopes, but not apart from resurrection, and its connection with the people of God here below. THE FAITH WHICH DEFIED THE FACTS ( Hebrews 11:30-31 ). God said, "And when I pass through the land tonight and I see the blood, I will pass over that house and the first-born will be spared." The real faith and the real courage are those which can take God's side when it seems doomed to defeat. She had gone out of the way of her duty through unbelief, in putting Abraham upon taking Hagar to his bed, that he might have a posterity. It is simply that the writer of the letter to the Hebrews saw even more deeply into the story. But a good point may be made by contrasting the idea which an Egyptian had when he arranged that his body should be embalmed, with the idea that Joseph had in arranging for the preservation of his bones. Thus, writes William Lincoln, while surrounded by Egypts pomp and splendor, his heart was not there at all, but with his people in their future glory and blessing.
